Comic "The Mosquitoes"
Les moustiques (The Mosquitoes) is the first part of a series of comics about insomnia, created as part of the NABA ateliers at Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2024/25.
It follows a woman through a sleepless night, kept awake by mosquitoes in her room. As the hours pass, she becomes increasingly consumed by their buzzing and bites, eventually slipping into a delirious state. As the experience drifts into the fantastic, it gradually dissolves into sleep, followed by the relief of waking on a bright morning after finally getting some rest. While fictional, this comic series draws on my lived experience of periods of severe insomnia over several years. The events venture into the fantastic but are intended to convey the emotional reality of that experience. The project is conceived as a series of chapters built around recurring patterns, mirroring the ever-recurring nature of the not-so-simple task of falling asleep.
16 pages. Gouache, pencil, and felt-tip pen. A small self-published edition (20 × 20 cm) is available at the bookstore Le Mont en l’Air in Paris.
